~ FOUNDATIONS ~

~ I am still there; frozen in time where first I heard the name "MAXIMUS". Right hand skillfully balancing a tray of organic meals for table 3, and on my left, the booming voice of my spiritual Father, Yod. As I turn to face him, laughter & giggles from the ladies around him, begin to rise. His turbaned bright eyes gleam as he declares: "he knows his name". Thus began the MAXIMUS journey; as Yod laid before me the ancient philosophers view, on the nature and power of Music.

~ Pythagorus drew charts; detailing the mathematical correlation between gravitational waves from the sun and moon, and the resonant effect of Musical Tones. The idea of the gravitational force between the sun & earth; resonating like a string on my guitar, was fascinating. In 10 years of playing guitar, & singing for my supper in Texas; I never heard about Galileo, Copernicus, Aristotle, & Kepler calculating the musical tones of the forces around us. The Earth’s position in it’s yearly ecliptic (oval) orbit, determines it’s distance from the Sun. According to Kepler’s Third Law: it is this variance of distance, that determines the Tone (fret) at which the earth resonates. Progressing a half step up the scale, every 30 days or so.

~ The Monastery is a great place to study, but when it comes to making Music, I like the country. So my wife and I left, to spend 7 years in the foot-hills of Mt. Shasta. Without electricity, we farmed the land, raising goats. & our daughter Dera. After the morning’ chores, I would ascend to my fire teepee, where my meditations, & breath yoga do not disturb the Ladies.

~ By tuning my guitar in the different Sitar tunings of eastern Classical Indian music; I can explore the musical forms, dedicated to ancient calculations of nature’s resonance. India’s elemental & seasonal Ragas, matched the Pythagorean calculations of distance, force, and Tone. According to Fludd & Pythagorus, here are the Keynotes, as well as the "ratio of composition", the 4 basic elements:

C (earth) = 4 parts earth

D (water) =3 parts earth, 1 part fire

A (air) =3 parts fire, & 1 part earth

F (fire) = 4 parts fire.

~ Returning to the luxury of city life in Texas, I no longer indulged my 7 year religious habit; of stimulating preferred secretions; by playing guitar ragas for several hours a day. To satisfy my addiction to Modal Music, I recorded my ragas, on the new cassette recorder. Ah, the things one can do with the power of electricity. In those precise moments, when the wife & child were not disturbed; I could record, condensed versions of my different seasonal tunings, and listen whenever I felt the need. In the mountains, I played only one raga tuning throughout the entire Season. I could stimulate my neural growth hormones with music anytime & disturb no one by using headphones.

~ Leaving my popular music aspirations, to study nature’s Modalities deep in the mountains, might seem harsh. But when I read that Ravi Shankar’s Teacher, made him play just one Raga, morning noon & night, for a full year before he was taught his second Sitar tuning; I knew I had it easy.

~ My wife was so impressed; she did a beautiful relaxation and meditation tape, for our growing therapy clientele, using my guitar ragas as background music. When our clients asked for cassette copies; Star (Virginia Clark), used her 3 years of experience as art director for Universal Artists Recording Division; to package our humble offering.

~ My wife produced album covers for Neil Diamond, Bill Cosby, &Decca Records; so she packaged our cassette, Marvelously. When she took an offer, to continue her healing work on the international stage; our daughter followed, leaving me with no one to disturb.

~ Fortunately a drummer, from my guitar crooning days, was in town and looking for a retreat from his wife and 3 kids. Of all the musicians I have been on stage or recorded with (Doug Sahm, Augie Meyer, Johnny Winter, Billy Preston, Sly Stone, Hugh Masegala, Larry Savoie, Delany & Bonnie), only Ep (not real name) found my unusual free form live modal style of playing; exciting and Fun. No longer limited to the number of bars in a song; we could jam for hours on a single Raga, as I switched from guitar to flute to drum duets and then back. With no wives, children, or neighbors on my Texas hillside; we assaulted modal music with the same exhilaration, an Olympic Athlete - in - training must feel.

~ Just west of my gate, the Pony Express & Stagecoach Stop, currently called Specht’s Store, is run by Jake & Kate. Their daughter studies The Ballet. Her friend Rene, takes an interest in expressing my music through Dance. We pour over each other’s insights; as we matched her classical ballet styles, with my Earth, Water, Fire, Air, & Ether Ragas. Watching their dance troupe rehearse, I saw the elemental nature of each movement, & relished new insights into the language of Dance. But before we can get funding for our efforts, Rene takes the offer to join the Boise Idaho Dance Troupe tour. She leaves me a firm believer in the ability of expressive Dance, to enhance hormonal secretions in Man.

~ Music is once again my only friend, as I chill from teaching Nature’s Bio-Balancing techniques to my weekly clients. A client is upgrading the sound system of his SA Roller Rinks, and trades equipment for his monthly adjustments. With electricity, amps, & Teac A-3440, 4 track Tape Recorder; Saturday nights are spent recording my Modal Guitar Ragas, on track 1 of the new recorder. Then I can record different accompaniment, with flute, bass guitar, banjo, harmonica, old church organ, or percussion on tracks 2,3, & 4; to be mixed to a cassette.

~ I observed the music’s effect, on the nervous tension of my weekly clientele, as they learned to relax. Adjusting the Presence, Instrumentation, or Volume of any Track , could completely change their reaction. By this process, I could choose the instrumentation Mix, producing Flow, rather than Tension.

~ Relaxing as it was, I missed the charge live Dancers brought to the music. Then Ep sent me a cassette of nature sounds, from his radio job in California. The effect of twirling Dancers, was stimulated by the sounds of a bubbling brook. I began recording Nature shows, matching sounds in nature to Dance moves, then mixing them into the music where dancers once were. Using all of Star’s graphic art tips, to package these tapes, I find more clients asking to take them home.

~ And so the years go by. Each week mastering the Elemental Nature of each instrument; then recording on the weekend to gauge the music’s Bio-Response, in my clients. Because of my addiction to stimulating secretions, for enhanced electric (spiritual) flow, through my neural net, I miss the freedom of playing Live. If only I could play all the instruments at once; in free form Modalities. I could, on Mt. Shasta, with just my guitar. Suddenly the advertisements for new computer keyboards; with built-in rhythm generators, began to make sense. I could program the precise Musical parameters of each instrument for each song: then manipulate them all as I play. But alas; my mastery of the piano is woefully inadequate for the task.
